Beware of artists. They mix with all classes of society and are therefore the most dangerous. ~Queen Victoria

Since I graduated high school, the thing to do in Jacksonville has become hookah. Yes, the thing you smoke from with the funny hose. No, not illegal drugs, but tobacco, and it’s way cleaner and way less tobacco than cigarettes. And it’s not like you can take a pack of hookahs with you on the go . . .

So anyways, when we were in Turkey this summer, my brother and I both got a hookah. He does hookah at home at hookah bars, but I’ve never done hookah. I just thought it looked really pretty, and it would be fun to do (though he STILL has yet to show me how).

Anyways, the dilemma about having the hookah up here is that I’m in the middle of North Carolina. They don’t exactly have an abundance of hookah stores, so where to get the tobacco and such? At the moment, I have some that Bo got at home and brought to me. I’ve been looking around online, and Hookah Town looks fairly decent, so perhaps we can try ordering from there.

My question - have you ever done hookah? What do you think of it? Is it really all it’s hyped up to be?

I am in no way endorsing the smoking of cigarettes, and I am CERTAINLY not endorsing the smoking of illegal substances. Hookah is basically steam with a little tobacco in it.

Hey! I tried it once this year at college and it was alright. I think I had more fun sitting in a circle chatting with friends while doing it, than the actual act of smoking. The flavour (I think we used a mango one) was pretty nice too.

I think you need to do a bit more research before starting any tobacco, filtered or not.

Lindsey found the bong shop! HA!

My friends have tried it with apple tobacco at a Lebanese restaurant and seemed to enjoy it. I didn’t feel comfortable trying it, though.

And you’re living in WINSTON-SALEM, for crying out loud. There HAS to be the right kind of tobacco somewhere in the area!

My sister did a group video project for class at the house of a friend who is of Iranian descent. They did not realize until they showed it in class that her family’s giant ceremonial bong was in the background the whole time.

I’ve never been much of a smoker. And in my conservative little corner of the world, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a shop that would sell the paraphenalia.

BTW, this is my first visit to your site, and I’ve got to say I’ve really enjoyed reading your work. You’re quite an inspiring soul, and I look forward to visiting again, and often.

    hey babe,
becca and i actually have one too. It’s a good time, because it’s more of a community thing where you sit around and pass it, but it’s not actually any better for you than cigs (just fyi). It’s not complicated at all, and there are tons of flavors of tobacco (when you come up here, I’ll take you to a store and get you some)You can smoke pot out of it if you want, thought it is not a very efficient way to smoke pot so most people do not.
