The other day in my travels around Bloggityville I found this post extolling the virtues of The Starbucks Refill. Yes, you heard right. This is not an urban myth. As an employee at Starbucks, I can vouch for our refill policy. If you come in and order a cup of brewed coffee, you can bring your cup back as many times and you want for a refill of about $0.50! Even if you get 10 refills . . . still only half a buck! Not only does that save YOU money, but it also cuts down on allllllll those paper cups going to the trash!
Another tidbit – you get a discount if you bring in your own personal cup for your cup of coffee, whether it’s just brewed coffee or your venti triple nonfat wet three Splenda cappuccino. Yay for not using the cups!
Saving money on high quality coffee and helping the environment? Works for me!

Hey, thanks for the tip! I had no idea. That is so cool!
Thanks for the tip! What an easy way to be “green” and save money too.
hmmmm….does this work for tea also?
I can’t believe that I never knew this. You have just made my day as I have recently polished off my coffee and have the cup sitting in front of me right now. I am rinsing it out and trying it at our local Starbucks. Excellent tip- the best one I have read so far today!!
I will have to tell my hubby this for sure!!!
Well that certainly helps with the high cost of GOOD coffee!! Cool!
What I don’t understand is why you get a .50 cent refill if you bring back a starbuck’s cup but only .10 cents off if you bring your own cup? I hope you can help me with this.
Sadly, I’ve realized that even when I bring in a reuseable cup, Starbucks is still marking and then throwing away a paper cup!! I was absolutely appalled.
Grrrr… I’m done with Starbucks.
So just to clear everything up… I also work at Starbucks. If you buy a drink you can get a refill (typically about $0.50). The policy is that you get the refill within an hour of purchase at the same location the initial drink was purchased. If you want to know this for sure it is posted on the front of each register just below where your total is displayed. I agree with others that the sign is much too small.
Actually if you buy any drink you can refill with hot or iced coffee/hot or iced tea. You can’t refill lattes or espresso’s
@Barista – Yes, that is absolutely the policy. However, in the spirit of Just Say Yes, lots of stores will give you a refill later in the day, or from another store (since regulars often go to a couple of different stores, and the baristas know this).
@Abdel – yes, since I published this post, the policy has changed a little. You can now get refills on iced coffee and iced teas as well (but not hot teas). Also, if you have a registered Starbucks card (no extra cost for registration), you get FREE drip coffee refills!
