One of the nominees for Best Play at the Tony Awards in 1963 was Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. It is an intense anti-war play that was recently remounted in 2006 as a part of the Shakespeare in the Park series in New York with Meryl Streep performing the title role (I wanted to go see that so bad!). This production was a new translation by Tony Kushner – more on him later!
