These days I can barely keep my head on straight. My classes are much more work-intensive this term than they were last year. I’m enjoying the material and I feel like I’m learning a lot, but there is so much homework! It’s exhausting me, especially with two jobs. I never have any free time anymore, LOL! I will have one less class next term, and the one class that I have that is particularly time consuming (my advanced marketing class) will be over, so hopefully this will slow down in a couple of weeks once the term is over.

I am still working in the school’s development office as the development intern and the production marketing office as a marketing associate, so I’m really getting a feel for many different aspects of the business. And I’m also gearing up for applying for internships for next year. To prepare, I reworked my resume (#26 on my 101 in 1001), which it DESPERATELY needed. I’m pretty satisfied with how it turned out too!

I actually had a sort of phone interview this week with a theatre that I would really like to work with in Atlanta next year, and they’ve asked me to come for a more formal interview in person, probably in January. I’m also starting to prepare other applications, though I may wait to act on them until this term is over (most of my classmates are waiting until January to start this process, so I am a tad early).

Exciting news came through this week about one of my other classes – we’re going to New York! My Producing in the Commercial Theatre class will be going to NYC for a week to meet with various different people in the commercial theatre (Broadway) industry – producers, marketers, etc. We really didn’t think the funding would come through on this, so we are so excited that it’s going to happen!

And once I’m back from that trip, I’ll have just a couple of weeks off from school (but not work) before we start back up again. I can’t wait until school is over, LOL!

The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria: Tasks must be specific (i.e. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (i.e. represent some amount of work on my part).

This project was taken from Triplux.

I completed my first 101 in 1001 on September 15, 2008!

The things that I say I want to MAINTAIN will be counted as completed if they are maintained for at least two months. I figure that if I maintain something for at least that long, then it’ll be habit.

Tasks I have completed will be struck through and a completion date will be listed that is linked to a post about the completion of that task. Tasks that I have begun will be italicized and a beginning date will be listed.

Started: September 15, 2008
Due Date: June 13, 2011
Tasks Completed: 48
Tasks Remaining: 53

1. Make this list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. If anything was left incomplete from my previous 101 in 1001, then figure out why I didn’t do it, and see if I can rework the goal. If so, it has to be on this list (these items have a ** in front of them). Completed 9/15/08

To appease the masses, I bring to you . . . an update.

Yes, I have been a very sucky blogger the past few months. Grad school + job = NO FREE TIME. Pity me, please?

OK, so last I spoke was when Nana passed away. I was in Georgia for about a week helping with funeral arrangements and the like, then I came back to North Carolina.

My kittens did great while I was gone (AJ watched them for me), and they also gained names! I named the one with more white on his face Oscar (for Oscar Peterson) and the other one is Miles (for Miles Davis). There will be more pictures to come, though they haven’t grown AT ALL since I got them (which, I shouldn’t say that too loud – they are precious and adorable, I like their size now, LOL). They love to cuddle with me and they are SO GOOD together – I can’t imagine ever seperating them. I feel bad because I am gone so much of the day, so I don’t get to spend nearly as much time with them as I want to, but since they have each other, I know that they’re doing just fine. They just really like to cuddle when I come home!

The next week was utter chaos because it was holiday at Starbucks, so crazy busy, and I also had one week to get ready for Christmas. AJ and I had a lovely Christmas on the 21st, and on the 22nd I had Christmas with his family. On the 23rd I drove to GA, had Christmas with MY family, and then drove back on the 26th.

On the . . . 29th? . . . I woke up at about 3:30AM with really intense pain in my lower right abdomen. I could barely stand up, and it made me throw up it hurt so bad. I was able to get to the computer, saw that the right side is the appendix side, and decided I didn’t want to risk it. I called AJ and woke him up and he got me to the ER. It turns out that I had a ruptured ovarian cyst, so the next week I was off my feet a bit and then taking it pretty easy. I feel much better now, but man that hurt!!!

Classes started back on January 4th, and it has been NONSTOP since then. At the moment my rotation is in the development office, and it’s very time intensive. My schedule most days is something like this:

Rotation: 8AM-9:30AM
Class: 10AM-2PM
Rotation: 2PM-4:30PM
Work: 5:45PM-11:45PM

Note that I get about 8 hours off . . . and those are the sleeping hours . . . try fitting homework and sanity time in there. I’m exhausted. Luckily, there are only about 4 more weeks of this rotation and then I switch to something a little more laid back, so if I can just hang in there.

I’m getting really tired of school. As I go through all my classes, I realize that I’m not really learning a ton. I don’t say this to be cocky, I just got a really great undergrad education, and my instincts are usually pretty good. If it weren’t for the darned three letters that I need to get a job (MFA), I probably would be just fine to have skipped all this. I just have to keep reminding myself that I’ve only got about a year and a half before my internship, and while that’s technically still school, it’s really a job too, and it will be in an office somewhere (or something . . .)

I have missed being able to be online. I feel like I’m losing a little bit of myself because of all the craziness. Summer will be a welcome time. How is everyone else doing (is anyone even reading my blog anymore)?

Things have been very busy around here as I am frantically trying to finish my apartment before school starts up! I’ve got about 2 more weeks – orientation is most of the second week of September, then classes start on the 13th – eek! I’m so nervous . . . I’ve REALLY enjoyed not having to go to class this past year, LOL! But I’m also excited because I’ve missed getting to work in the theatre.

I’m also nervous because I’m going to keep working at Starbucks. Class is about 12 hours a week plus 20 hours a week of working on campus for academic credit . . . and then 30-35 hours a week at Starbucks. I hope that I don’t kill myself. Organization and motivation will have to be key.

I’m really liking my new apartment. For the first time I’m living somewhere that feels like it could be home. I haven’t felt that outside of my parents’ home before, I’ve always felt like I was just at the current stopping point. It’s a little strange living by myself though (I really really want kittens, but so far my parents say no . . .)

How are you doing? I feel like I haven’t heard from my (few) readers in forever . . . I don’t even know who still pays attention to my blog anymore, I’ve been so sporadic lately . . .

1. In honor of the retirement of the Thursday Thirteen, I figured this was an appropriate theme. And number one on my list is the confidence I have gained from the Thursday Thirteen! My blog wasn’t read by many before the T13, and when the first set of management changes happened, Leanne trusted me enough to be one of the new co-hostesses of the T13! This brought me new readers, thus boosting my confidence. My posts are VERY different now than they were pre-13, and so most of the things I have gained from blogging came out of the T13!!

2. Friendships! I have met so many amazing people through blogging, and that is soooo the stereotypical answer, but it is very true.

3. A new outlet for writing! I used to write creatively alllllll the time, but once I got into college I was writing so much for my classes that I didn’t want to write anymore. Blogging brought me a way to write and enjoy it again, and it’s even renewed my desire to write creatively!

4. My 101 in 1001 has given me a visible platform to write down goals that I’ve been wanting to achieve, and an audience to keep me accountable.

5. The Works-for-Me Wednesday meme has given me so many fantastic tips that I have used in my everyday life!

6. Through blogging I found FlyLady, which is a life altering event! ‘Nuff said!

7. Also through blogging I found Bookcrossing.com, which has revolutionized my thoughts on books and has jumpstarted my pleasure reading, which also stagnated with all my college reading!

8. As I have discussed before, I was very environmentally-conscious when I was younger. Blogging brought that back!

9. As someone who is committed to breast health awareness, blogging has been a great platform for sharing what I know and connecting with women on something that may save their lives!

10. An outlet, of course! When I get excited or worked up about something, online is on of the first places that I go!

11. Blogging has also led me into the world of personal finance management. It’s made me aware as I am leaving college on the importance of saving, budgeting, and investing, something that I will be thankful for for the rest of my life!

12. Blogging on my personal blog has led me to create another blog, Reading Red Letters, my faith blog. This has been a great way to connect with other Christians online, and has led me to many great online blogs and resources that have aided me in my walk.

13. And, in case there was any doubt . . . BLOGGING IS FUN!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for a great couple of years with the T13!!! I have so much enjoyed getting to know people, and I hope to stay in touch with you as we continue blogging!!!

I’ve got a dirty little secret . . .

I am a pack rat. I am not as bad as many, but I am there, and if I don’t carefully keep things in check, the clutter will CONSUME me! As a result I have too much STUFF . . . and nowhere to put it. This drives me crazy, because I’m actually a very organized person. However, my perfectionism is pretty strong too, so since I can’t take everything out of my room and put it all back perfectly in, oh, I don’t know, 30 minutes, I just don’t even try. So the stuff just keeps accumulating, and I keep not doing anything about it.

Since I live in an apartment, the majority of my STUFF is in my room . . . namely my closet, which is actually really big. However, there is so much chaos in there that I don’t know what I have . . . lots of clothes (of which I wear maybe half), tons of books (mostly unread), and a mass accumulation of papers and books for classes that I’m not even taking anymore.

What do to??? I don’t need it, it just makes me unhappy, and it makes for a home that is not what it should be – comforting and inviting. I’ve gotten a lot better about getting rid of things as they come into the home since I started with FlyLady, but I have yet to conquer the demons of my dirty little secret . . . my closet.

The solution – actually get in there and take care of business!!!!! And why am I blogging about this? Because I was just motivated to clean out my closet by a challenge from another blogger. I have until December 6th to get it all cleaned out, sorted through, and put back together in an organized and functioning manner!

Do you have a dirty little secret? Come join us for the 30 Day Organizing Challenge! Accepting all packed closets, jumbled drawers, and under-the-bed hiding spaces!

As you know, I have been working towards my Masters in management since July. This was in anticipation of a gained sense of business know-how that would aid in my quest to manage theatre.

Yesterday morning I withdrew from the program.

The program in and of itself is not a bad program, but it wasn’t right for me. It is the first year of the program, so there are still a lot of kinks to get worked out, the biggest of them being the recruitment/advertising problems. The program was billed with the tagline of “put your passion to work,” and they recruited people using the examples of people wanting to manage theatres, art galleries, etc.

However, upon going to classes, we quickly realized that the program was more geared at people who wanted to expand their knowledge into business for career purposes. We were requested to pick a field that we wanted to work in – human resources, marketing, investment banking, etc. None of those have anything to do with a previously conceived passion. The focus of the program is very much a corporate business focus.

The course work was IDENTICAL to the first year MBA coursework – same syllabi, same professors, etc. Had I known going into the program that that was the way it worked, I never would have applied. However, it being the first year, there was no way to get a testimonial, and I was forced to take what the recruiters were saying as fact.

For months I have been growing more and more miserable. The work is extremely difficult (I’ve never worked so hard in my life), extremely boring, and extremely not me. I haven’t been enjoying it for quite some time, and in the past couple of weeks I’ve come to the point where I couldn’t talk myself into staying any longer. Also, the courses are mostly based on group assignments and a final exam. The only real indicator of personal achievement is the final exam, and I was slowly discovering that my exam grades were not to my personal standards of success. Why slave away at something I don’t enjoy with no sense of accomplishment? It was a downward spiral.

So, after much deliberation, I withdrew. My family and close friends all support my decision, and I trust them very much, so that has helped with the process.

Now I’m faced with the fact that I’m not in school (for the first time in 20 years), and I have to do something. I have to get a job (which, of course, I wasn’t expecting to be an issue for at least 8 more months), and I need to start being a grown-up for real. And I have no idea where to begin.

So I am sorry for my absence, but there has just been too much going on in the decision-making department lately. However, I feel like a huge load has been lifted from my chest, and I am eager to see where life takes me now.

Please pray for me as I try and discern where I go now.

And now, back to blogging. I feel like I can get back to where I was before!!!! I missed blogging, and all my commentors! Life online is simply too addicting !

It occured to me that in all my panic about my old computer crashing, I never posted about my new computer!

As many of you know, I went to undergraduate school at Wake Forest University, and they are nationally known for their excellent technology program, particularly for the fact that upon entering the school, every student and faculty member receive an IBM ThinkPad. Upon entering their junior year, all the students trade in their ThinkPad for a newer model, and when they graduate, they get to take it with them.

I recently started graduate school at the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest. The majority of the people in my program went to Wake Forest undergrad, and when we were told we would be receiving a new computer upon entering this program, we all assumed we were getting the newest ThinkPad.

Not so.

Day one of orientation, and the IT department rolls in with these babies.

It’s a Convertible Notebook, which basically means it’s a laptop, but if you swivel the screen around, it’s a tablet. It’s pretty cool. So far the tablet has been useful for taking notes in class, especially in classes like accounting where I have to draw graphs from time to time.

It’s also a fast little bugger – waaaaaaaay faster than the ThinkPad. That makes me happy, because I HATED how slow that computer was. From day one it was slow.

Downside – there’s a ton of stuff running in the background. It doesn’t run on regular Windows XP Professional or Home or anything . . . it has it’s own XP Tablet Edition, which means there are some additional software features that are running on the computer that area always running.

I haven’t fully decided if I like it or not. There are a lot of features that I do like (the graphics card is pretty decent, and I LOVE the widescreen monitor – that is something I will never go back from), but it is kind of funny to get used to it. Plus, I couldn’t get too excited about it at first because I was so bummed about the crash of the old computer.

So, that’s my newest toy. Does anyone else have a tablet (of any kind)? Any tips or horror stories?

Thirteen Things about LINDSEY

1. My days are getting all mixed up, LOL! I think it was last Thursday that we went to Ephesus. The cruise ship docked in Kusadasi, Turkey, and then we took a bus out to Ancient Ephesus. These ruins weren’t in as good condition as the ruins at Pompeii, but it was still really cool, especially when the guide pointed out the huge amphitheatre where Paul preached. Then we drove back into Kusadasi and looked at really nice Turkish carpets, haha! It was fun.

2. On Friday we went to Athens. The first stop was the Acropolis – it was HUGE! I had no idea how big those buildings were. We saw temples and things, and we also saw the Theatre of Dionysus (which was really cool because I’ve studied it for so long in theatre classes). Then we took a bus to Corinth where we traveled on a boat through the Corinth Canal (which is reeeeeeally narrow). It was a nice change from the boiling hot ruins.

3. The next day was a day at sea, which I promptly spent all day in my pajamas reading. Yay relaxation!

4. The next day was the last stop – Venice. I have decided that I am moving to Venice. I was sooooo in love, and I’m not even really sure why. I just had a feeling about it. I’m not even joking – when I get home I’m going to research living in Venice and the opportunities MagicMouth might have there.

5. In Venice we went to a neat house that has been converted into a museum, then St. Mark’s church (which we didn’t spend nearly enough time in), and finally the Doge’s Palace, which was huge. It was really neat. And of course, that night, we had a gondola ride. Cheesy, yes. But you can’t go to Venice and not go on a gondola ride, LOL!

6. The next morning we had to leave the ship at 4:30AM in order to get to the airport in time! We were in Paris by lunchtime. How’s that for fast travel? LOL!

7. We spent the day in Paris going on a driving tour through the city, just so we could get our bearings. Then that evening we went to the Arc de Triomphe and walked along the Champs Elysees (stopping at both Haagen Daas and Louis Vuitton, of course ).

8. The next day we went out the palace at Versailles, which was massive. Then we met up with a friend at Notre Dame (a co-pilot for Air France who lives in Paris), which was nice. Then we headed back to the hotel, changed clothes, and went to a show at the Moulin Rouge! That was fun, though it was nothing like what it looked like in the movie, haha.

9. On Wednesday (yesterday) we went to the Lourve first thing in the morning and spent the morning there. It was soooo huge, but I saw a lot more than I thought I would. I felt very productive, haha. Then we walked along the Seine River down to the Eiffel Tower, but we didn’t go up. The line was long, and we were tired of walking, haha. Then we went back to the hotel.

10. Yesterday night was the France vs. Portugal game for futbol, and since France won, we had a hard time falling asleep because of all the cars honking all night long, haha. But it was really cool to be there for that game.

11. This morning we woke up at the crack of dawn AGAIN to go to the airport . . . and right now I’m sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting for our connecting flight to Jacksonville. It will be good to sleep in my own bed tonight, hahaha! Thus ends the European vacation . . . pictures to follow at some point this weekend.

12. Heard from Ben – things are good with his mother. Thank you for your prayers.

13. And of course, a quiz:

“I’m on tonight
You know my hips don’t lie
And I’m starting to feel it’s right
All the attraction, the tension
Don’t you see baby, this is perfection”
