Cover of August: Osage County

I was lucky enough to see Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner August: Osage County, by Tracy Letts, two days after it won the Tony Award for Best Play. This play is about 3 1/2 hours long. You truly feel as though you have been sitting there for 20 minutes. It is incredibly engaging, and very emotionally moving. You have to read this play if you haven’t already!!!!!

I would be completely remiss if I didn’t showcase the 2007 Regional Tony Award Winner, the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA. Why? Because that’s where I am working!!! I’m completing my third year internship with the Alliance this year, and now that I’ve been there 3 weeks, I can’t say enough good things about them! I am so thrilled to be a part of such an awesome organization, and I hope that I can continue to be with the Alliance for a long time!

Don’t forget, as we near the end! At the end of Blogathon 2009, I’ll take the top three sponsors (largest donations) and let them pick one of the shows I mention today. If it’s a musical, then they’ll get the soundtrack for free. If it’s a play, then they’ll get the script for free. Don’t you want to sponsor me now?!?!

One of the nominees for the Tony Awards Best Musical was The Color Purple, based on the book by Marsha Norman and produced (among others) by Oprah Winfrey. This one is particularly exciting for me because it went to Broadway after first being mounted on the stage at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA . . . where I am currently completing my internship!!!

I promise, I’ll be done with showcasing strange, disturbing theatre soon (maybe because Blogathon is almost over, LOL), but I HAVE to talk about Tony Award nominee for Best PlayThe Pillowman, by Martin McDonagh. I love this one (and it prompted me to read several other McDonagh works). Again, not for the easily offended . . .

I was fortunate enough to see Tony Award nominee for Best Musical Wicked in the last week that the original cast was there. I adore this show. I’ve read the book, and it was just too political for me. But this production made me feel like a little kid again. LOVE IT!

Suzan-Lori Parks won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with her play Topdog/Underdog, which was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. This is one of my all-time favorite plays. The dialogue is stunning, almost as if the entire work is one long poem. It is breathtaking, and I hope it is revived on Broadway because I would LOVE to see it!

Mel Brooks makes his Broadway debut with Tony Award winning Best Musical The Producers. By far the most successful of all his theatrical productions, The Producers is hilarious!

At the turn of the century, Broadway figured it was time to redefine the musical yet again. Enter Contact, a dance musical that won the Tony Award for Best Musical with much controversy. So much so that they created a whole new award called Special Theatrical Event for future Tony Award seasons (well, that is until this year . . . they’ve decided to discontinue that award). I saw Contact on tour, and it was quite breathtaking!

The Lion King cleaned up at the Tonys, including Best Musical. With music by Time Rice and Elton John, and both direction and design by the talented Julie Taymor, The Lion King shook Broadway again, this time with the sheer magnitude of the big pocketbook that Disney could offer. It wasn’t long before Disney Theatrical moved into their GORGEOUS (trust me, I’ve seen it!) offices at the New Amsterdam Theater, and were on Broadway to stay!

Chicago didn’t win any awards when it originally appeared on Broadway in1975, but it won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997, and spawned a film version in 2002.
